Expanding preclinical research options for underserved childhood cancers

Developing new treatments for childhood cancers requires models that reflect the diseases researchers aim to treat. ITCC-P4 is working to broaden its preclinical model portfolio, with a focus on gaps that limit research into rare and high-risk paediatric cancers.

Childhood cancers encompass many biologically distinct diseases. For researchers investigating a specific tumour type or molecular subgroup, finding suitable preclinical models can be challenging. Limited model availability can restrict opportunities to evaluate promising treatment approaches and understand differences in response.

At ITCC-P4, portfolio development is driven by these scientific needs. Working with academic collaborators and our partner CROs, we seek opportunities to bring additional patient-derived models into the platform and strengthen the representation of underserved diseases.

This work involves more than increasing model numbers. Establishing a model for preclinical research requires careful assessment of its identity, molecular characteristics and suitability for the intended experimental setting. These steps help determine which questions a model can meaningfully address.

Dialogue with researchers and drug developers is an important part of this process. Understanding where suitable models are missing helps us identify priorities for portfolio expansion and explore potential collaborations.

Alongside these efforts, we support partners in assessing what can already be investigated using the existing portfolio and where additional models, characterisation or alternative experimental approaches may be needed.

Through this continued development, ITCC-P4 aims to broaden the evidence base for evaluating new therapies and create more research opportunities for childhood cancers with limited treatment options.
